Letters to Noah Gebbart in California, while he was engaged in mining lead and quartz, concerning his life there, and letters to his relatives from some of his Masonic brothers telling of his murder. Also, papers of Emanuel Martin Gebbart, a Union soldier and member of the 15th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers, concerning military activities at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Atlanta, food and amusements in the army, Afro-American troops, deserters, and foraging and destruction by the Union Army. Included is a memorandum book and journal, 1863-1865, giving an account of his trip with Sherman's army from Vicksburg to Meridian and back. Also present are letters relating to the Knights of the Golden Circle in Iowa.
